Strawberry Panna Cotta

The fruity strawberry coulis pairs perfectly with creamy vanilla panna cotta. The strawberry coulis can be made while the panna cotta sets, making the whole dessert super easy!

The great thing about strawberry panna cotta is how cheap it is. You’ll find that panna cotta ingredients are generally pretty inexpensive, meaning you can spend most of your cash on the main course and still impress your guests (or date) with a fancy dessert.

Whether you’re making spaghetti and meatballs or a fancy steak dinner, this is the dessert you need. The best part? It’s totally make ahead, meaning that you can have it ready before you even start on dinner!

What Is Panna Cotta

Panna cotta is a sweet dessert that is super popular in Italy. It is made from cream, vanilla, and sugar heated slowly with gelatin. The whole mixture is set, creating a silky, mousse-like consistency.

Panna cotta has a light flavor, so other flavor components are often added to it such as this strawberry panna cotta. Other popular flavors include:

  • Mango panna cotta
  • Chocolate panna cotta
  • Coconut panna cotta
  • Lemon panna cotta
  • Coffee panna cotta
  • Pumpkin panna cotta

Usually, the panna cotta will be made with a vanilla base, and a syrup or coulis will be added to it. Other times, the syrup or flavoring will be mixed into it.

This strawberry panna cotta is the perfect Italian dessert!

How To Make Panna Cotta

To make this panna cotta recipe:

  • Dissolve gelatin in 2 tablespoons of milk for about 5 minutes
  • Heat the cream, remaining milk, sugar, and vanilla. This is to help dissolve the sugar, so don’t boil it or you’ll risk burning the cream
  • Once heated, cool and add gelatin
  • Pour into serving glasses and chill until set, about 4 hours
  • Make the coulis, top the panna cotta with it and serve

Looking to make these look even fancier? If you have a little more time, lay the strawberry panna cotta cups in a muffin tin on an angle to offset them slightly. This will create a really cool diagonal line between the panna cotta and strawberry coulis!

How To Make Strawberry Coulis

To make the strawberry coulis to top this recipe, all you need to do is add strawberries, sugar, vanilla, and lemon zest to a saucepan and cook it down. Fresh strawberries cook down the best, but in a pinch frozen strawberries will do.

The lemon zest will help to round out the intense strawberry flavor, resulting in a perfect coulis that will make the strawberry panna cotta shine.

I love my coulis to have some strawberry chunks in it, but if you prefer a thinner sauce just run it through a sieve before adding it to the panna cotta.

One important note, the strawberry coulis will be need to be completely cooled before you add it to the panna cotta, or it will melt together and ruin the dish. Make sure everything is chilled correctly!

Ingredients

Panna Cotta:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream or whipping cream
  • 1/2 packet gelatin powder (1 tablespoon)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Strawberry Coulis:

  • 1 pound strawberries fresh or frozen
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, dissolve gelatin in a tablespoon of cold water.
  • Heat milk, heavy cream, vanilla, and sugar in a saucepan until sugar is just dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool for a couple of minutes.
  • Add the gelatin to the cream mixture, then pour the mixture into serving glasses. If desired, lay serving glasses on an angle in a muffin tray to create a slant in the panna cotta.
  • Place panna cotta in the fridge for approximately 60 minutes or until set.
  • Meanwhile, heat all ingredients for the strawberry coulis over medium heat in a saucepan. Continue stirring occasionally as the strawberries break down and the sugar dissolves.
  • If desired, strain the coulis through a sieve to ensure it is smooth. (I prefer it without straining).
  • Allow strawberry coulis to come to room temperature. Once completely cooled, spoon overtop of the panna cotta. Serve.
